Tall Hukura Vase

This elegant vase stands on a small foot, its graceful form widening towards the shoulders before closing into a narrow neck. The distinctive Hukura finish begins with a perfectly smooth vessel onto which a textured slip is carefully applied. The surface is then glazed in white before the glaze is largely removed again, leaving it to gather only around the raised texture. The result is a unique interplay of raw clay, soft white glaze and sculptural relief that is unlike any conventional glazing technique.

The larger vase in this series was selected for the Annual Members Juried Exhibition 2026 at Ceramics Western Cape, held at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town.
