Martin wanted to name his business and searched for a word that sounded round and full, like an African song. He eventually came up with ‘Tungoma’ by literally playing with vowel sounds. It was only after settling on Tungoma that he discovered it is actually a word in Shona that means little drum. Shona is a rich, melodic African language so it felt fitting to use Shona words to name the products in the shop.
